AICHI-NAGOYA Indian fencers Bhavani Devi and Shreya Gupta bowed out in the round of 16 of the women’s sabre individual event at the 2026 Asian Games on Thursday, ending their campaigns after reaching the knockout stages. Bhavani, an Olympian, defeated Kazakhstan’s Aigerim Sarybay 5-4 and Thailand’s Arisara Somphao 5-2 before advancing. Bhavani had suffered three pool-stage defeats, losing 5-1 to South Korea’s Jeongmi Kim, 5-4 to Iran’s Najmeh Sazanjian and 5-4 to Uzbekistan’s Zaynab Dayibekova. She then beat Mongolia’s Oulen Tugsjargal 15-8 in the round of 32 to reach the pre-quarterfinals. Her run ended against China’s Rao Xueyi, a 2026 Worlds silver medallist, who won 15-5. Shreya, the other Indian to reach the round of 16, also faced a tough opponent and lost 15-6 to South Korea’s Jeon Ha-young, the silver medallist at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The results ended India’s challenge in the individual women’s sabre competition, with both fencers unable to progress to the quarterfinals. Elsewhere, India added medals in other events on Thursday. Roshibina Devi won her second consecutive Asian Games silver after losing the women’s sanda 60kg final to China’s Zhang Xiaoyu. Roshibina, who also won silver at the 2022 Hangzhou Games, had beaten Vietnam’s 2023 world champion Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy and Indonesia’s Thania Kusumaningtyas on her way to the final. Rowers Satnam Singh and Salman Khan also secured bronze in the men’s double sculls, taking India’s medal tally to 14, comprising one gold, six silvers and seven bronzes. Balraj Panwar finished fourth in men’s singles sculls after being overtaken during the final 500 metres. The fencing results came alongside India’s medal-winning performances in sanda and rowing at the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
