Top cop distributes mask, stresses on mask usage

Police commissioner Kamal Pant distributed free masks among the public in different parts of the city on Saturday, driving home the message that their usage is important to check the spread of Covid-19.

Accompanied by other senior cops, Pant interacted with members of the public at City Market, Town Hall and Russell Market.

The top cop first visited City Market circle around 11.30am. On seeing many police vehicles and personnel, a crowd of bystanders gathered in the area, many of whom were not wearing a mask.

Pant began by distributing masks. Thinking the cops were there to penalise offenders, many fled the scene. However, some stayed back to listen to the commissioner. “We are not happy to penalise you. Please understand that wearing masks is for your own good. We, the public, should actively participate in fighting Covid-19. Wearing mask in public is one of the best precautions,” he said.

All deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) conducted similar awareness drives on the importance of masks in their respective jurisdictions. In many places, constabulary officials were even seen distributing roses with masks.

“The public bombarded us with questions on mask usage. We told them whenever you step out of the house, you should wear one,” a senior officer said.
