Temple priest’s house set on fire

Tension gripped Sadarahalli in Channapatna taluk, Ramanagaram district, on Tuesday night as villagers set on fire a house and vehicles of a local archaka, holding him responsible for the death of a couple.

Lokesh (30) and his wife Kousalya (22) were found dead at their residence on Tuesday. Hours earlier, the archak, Thyagaraj, had allegedly sent photos of Ms. Kouslaya taken along with him in Bengaluru to some of the villagers, sources at the Channapatna police station said.

Thyagaraj is archaka at the Sri Muthyalamma temple in Sadarahalli.

As the news spread, the villagers, angry over the death of the couple, set on fire two cars, two motorcycles, a tractor and the house of the archak. Anticipating the attack, the archak had fled the village, police said.

No arrests have been made so far. Senior officials are camping in the village with security personnel.
