Minister for Public Works H.D. Revanna and former Congress Minister B. Shivaramu, who had been bitter political enemies for four decades, were all smiles on Tuesday as they met and vowed to fight the Lok Sabha elections together. Mr. Revanna’s son Prajwal is set to contest from Hassan constituency on JD(S) ticket.
Over the past few days, both father and son have been meeting leaders of the Congress, seeking their support in the elections.
Mr. Shivaramu told the media that according to the decision of the party high command, Congress workers in the district would campaign for the coalition candidate. However, he added that party workers were disappointed under the present rule as they were being ignored. “I wish they will not be ignored at least in the future”, he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Revanna said, “I never do vindictive politics. My concern is the development of the district. We have come together to fight communal forces”. When asked if Congress president Rahul Gandhi would visit Hassan for the poll campaign, the Minister said he would be glad if he came.
Mr. Shivaram, a four-time MLA, has been a strong voice against JD(S) leaders in the district in the past decade. During the Congress’ rule, he took on JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda and Mr. Revanna on many issues. Both Mr. Revanna and Mr. Shivaramu were Ministers under the Congress-JD(S) coalition, but they barely shared a dais in Hassan.
Mr. Revanna also met his former party colleague C.S. Putte Gowda in Channarayapatna and sought his support. Mr. Gowda left the JD(S) for the Congress in 2013.
