Much has been said about actress Deepika Padukone’s next movie venture with director Meghna Gulzar, and now it has been confirmed that actor Vikrant Massey will star opposite her and that the title of the film will be Chhapaak. Deepika had announced earlier that she will be starring in the movie, based on acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, and that she will also co-produce.
Recently, Meghna revealed in an interview with Mumbai Mirror that everything is coming into place, and that both she and Deepika are excited that Vikrant will be a part of the movie.
“The cast is slowly coming together. Vikrant is somebody I’ve wanted to work with since Raazi, after seeing him in A Death in the Gunj. In the film, he plays a North Indian boy who used to be a professional before he decided to become an actor, then, started a campaign against acid violence which is how he came to meet Laxmi in real life. I speak for both Deepika and myself when I say that we are both really excited to have Vikrant play this part,” Meghna told the daily.
Deepika had herself told the Mirror in an earlier interview, that the story made such an impact on her that she personally and creatively needed to go beyond, and so she decided to turn producer.
Regarding the name of the movie, Meghna said that two names had come to mind; one was Gandhak, which is the Hindi word for sulphuric acid, and the other Chhapaak, for splashing sound.
“The latter spoke to me strongly and resonated with everyone I bounced it off as it conveys that the film is about acid violence almost immediately and quite effortlessly,” she said.
About choosing Deepika to play Laxmi, she said that the Padmaavat actress was the only one who came to mind for the part.
“But I didn’t think even in my wildest dreams that she would agree to do this role. It’s not easy when your face is your calling card. To agree to put that on the line and disguise yourself as an acid attack survivor for a film is a difficult path to tread,” she stated.
Meghna also revealed that the film is expected to go on the floors in the third week of March and that it will be shot in Mumbai and Delhi.
