The case of a 13-year-old girl being allegedly raped by a youth in Arkalgud taluk and forced to marry him after she got pregnant, only to avoid a police case, has come to light following a call to the child helpline.
The helpline staff rescued the girl with the help of Arkalgud police and produced her before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on Tuesday evening.
The girl was allegedly raped by Sachin, 19, and he reportedly threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident. Her parents learnt about the incident when they took her to a doctor after she complained of stomach ache. The accused and his family members allegedly coerced the victim’s family against filing a case, the helpline staff said on Thursday. The accused married her in June.
According to her statement recorded by the CWC, her in-laws attempted to murder her a couple of times. She was rescued by the helpline staff following a phone call from one of the villagers.
The girl is now in a child home under the supervision of the CWC. The accused is absconding.
