Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested an eight-member armed gang, who were duping people of lakhs of rupees indulging in illegal sale of firearms, robbery, house burglary and ‘rice pulling’ frauds.
Police recovered two country-made pistols, eight live cartridges, an air gun and 500 ml chloroform from the gang. T Suneel Kumar, city police commissioner, said the gang used to dupe people claiming they have ‘rice pulling metal’. They would promise that keeping the metal at home will make the buyer rich. When potential buyers arrive, they would be threatened with pistols and robbed. The gang would then flee. Most victims would not come forward to complain. Shakeel Ahmed (24) from Hebbal, Shravan Khatri (32) from Rajasthan, Imran Khan (31) from Amravati, Jaleel Umar (29) from Bhatkal, Rafi Ahmed Khan (20) from Kolar, Syed Waseem (25) from Nagawara, Mohammed Hasan Ansari (43) from Mumbai, Imran Raees (23) from Uttar Pradesh were arrested. They were caught from Taralabalu Road in RT Nagar. The gang was produced before the magistrate and sent to eight days in police custody.
Two of the accused confessed they had come to the city to sell weapons. They were members of another inter-state gang and were planning robberies here. The commissioner further added that the gang had been indulging in multiple crimes like robbery, burglary and cheating. They used to lure gullible businessmen too, offering herbs, rice pulling vessels and other antiques. When they come with the money, the accused would rob them at gun point, sometimes rendering them unconscious using chloroform. A detailed investigation will be underway, added the commissioner. Police also recovered a cutter, two Royal Enfields and Rs 55,000 in cash. A case has been registered at the RT Nagar police station. Alok Kumar, additional commissioner police (crime), said the organised crime wing was investigating sale of illegal firearms. “Preliminary investigation revealed that two gang members from Amravati in Maharashtra were smuggling firearms to sell in the city,” he said. Suneel Kumar announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh to the CCB team for nabbing the gang.
