Bengaluru police start #selfieonskywalk initiative to reduce pedestrian casualties

Bengaluru: In an attempt to create awareness to use skywalks, Bengaluru Traffic Police east division has opened a contest for pedestrians called ‘selfieonskywalk’. This initiative came up after a study showed that 50 per cent pedestrians were involved in fatal accidents in Bengaluru.

According to traffic police, using skywalks can prevent many such accidents. With an aim to promote the use of skywalks, Bengaluru traffic police, in association with Maya films have launched a ‘selfie on skywalk’ contest. Contest will be open between March 31- April 7 and five winners will be felicitated by DCP- Bengaluru Traffic East division.

DCP traffic East Abhishek Goyal said, “The idea came up after we found that among the fatal accidents in Bengaluru during 2016, 50 per cent of them were pedestrians. Hence, we started this initiative.”

In 2017, 115 fatal accidents were reported and 126 lives lost. In 2016, 754 fatal accidents were reported in Bengaluru and 793 people died in road accidents.

What pedestrians have to do?

Click a selfie at any skywalk and post it on Twitter and Facebook under #selfieonskywalk and #besafe. Tag friends to create awareness and challenge them to do the same. Winners will be judged by the quality of the selfie, and the number of friends tagged and influenced to send selfies.

What came as a surprise to the Bengaluru Traffic police was the fact that former Indian Cricketer Venkatesh Prasad posted his photo on the skywalk and participated in the contest.
