A fresh outbreak of fire was reported from Kundkere range of Bandipur Tiger Reserve on Thursday afternoon, but the authorities were able to douse it within hours. The fire was sighted by forest watchers around 3.45 P.M near a private resort and soon, over 100 field staff, including volunteers and forest watchers, reached the spot and got engaged in stomping it out. Four fire extinguishers were pressed into service. “The fire spread to the canopy of two trees and they were chopped to prevent the flames from spreading”, said T. Balachandra, director, Bandipur Tiger Reserve. He said the fire extinguishers and watchers managed to bring the situation under control by 5.30 P.M. Vast swathes of Bandipur were ravaged by a major fire in February and satellite data analysis indicated that the area affected was in excess of 15,000 acres.
