Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike ( BBMP ) likely to complete 27 more water bodies by march. So far BBMP has rejuvenated 92 water bodies. Palike has under their custody a total of 167 lakes among that 19 are converted to bus stands, layouts and offices.
Jagannath Rao, Deputy Conservator of Forests, BBMP said, “We have already revived 65 lakes, and work on the 27 will be over by March. This year, we will undertake the revival of another 30-40 lakes and will call for tenders soon after the budget is announced. Next year, we will take up the remaining 15, so that in another two years, all 148 lakes in our custody will be restored.”
Over the past 10 year the agency has utilized funds worth Rs 280 crore for the revival of the water bodies. Rs 3 crore is allotted for per lake. In the near future Palike is hoping to rejuvenated other lakes too but they require more than the grant given to them by the government. They need Rs 30-40 crore for further rejuvenation.
BBMP has constructed sewage treatment plants to put an end to the inflow of sewage into the lake. They also have diverted its downstream so that the lakes will be filled with rain water alone. Besides that they have beautified the surrounding areas of the lake by planting saplings and trees
