It is no secret that Karan Johar and Kajol’s friendship soured in 2016, after Ajay Devgn shared a recording where self-proclaimed critic Kamaal Rashid Khan was heard saying that the filmmaker paid him Rs 25 lakh to praise his directorial venture Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and trash Ajay’s film Shivaay which released on the same day.
When Kajol retweeted it and wrote that she was “shocked”, the battle lines were drawn. Karan wrote in his memoir, An Unsuitable Boy, “She was the one who mattered to me but now it’s over. I wouldn’t like to give a piece of myself to her at all because she’s killed every bit of emotion I had for her for twenty-five years.”
Of course, they have patched up since. When Kajol and Ajay came on Karan’s chat show, the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil director recounted how difficult it was for him when he was not on talking terms with his best friend.
“There was a time when I decided I will not wish her and talk to her. It was a calculated decision. We were at Manish Malhotra’s show and I just walked past. It’s very difficult for me to look through Kajol, whom I have known all my life and closely. It was very tough,” he said.
But even when they were not talking, Karan could not stop himself from caring about Kajol. She revealed, “I just want to tell you that at Manish’s show, he has looked past me and gone there. Then, I was about to fall, and Karan has gotten up almost instinctively to help me. Then he kind of controlled himself and sat back down.”
Karan then apologised to Kajol for writing about their rift in his biography. “I really missed you those years that we didn’t speak and I wish I could take back that chapter out of that book of mine. I feel really… I have to say this on national television that I’m really sorry because I should not have written that chapter but I did,” he said.
