Karnataka hails SC ruling rejecting Telangana petition

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling rejecting the petition of Telangana government seeking redistribution of Krishna water among all the four riparian States. In October, 2016, the Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal (KWDT) had rejected Telangana’s appeal on the issue.

Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil said that the Court decision vindicated Karnataka’s stand, opposing any move to consider the plea of Telangana to re-look into the already adjudicated matter by the KWDT-II.

The Telangana government’s plea was that section 89 of the AP Reorganisation Act meant redistribution of Krishna water among all the four riparian States including the newly carved Telangana. The State was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in February 2014.

Karnataka and Maharashtra had opposed the petition, and the Union government had also opined on the same line and submitted an affidavit before the Tribunal.

In 2010, the Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal had allocated 666 tmc ft. of water to Maharahstra, 907 to Karnataka and 1,005 to Andhra Pradesh. The award is binding till 2050.
